Sharyn / Charyn canyon

Sharyn (Charyn) - the river and its canyons are located 200 km east of Almaty. The Sharyn River is formed at the confluence of the rivers Karkara and Kensu. Its length is about 430 km. The river basin covers an area of 7,720 km2. It is the longest and most humid river among the tributaries of the Ile within Kazakhstan. In some areas (about 80 km) the river flows in deep canyons, which reach a depth of 100-200 m.

The Sharyn River has a chain of canyons, which end up in the north with a vast delta of about 25 km long and 35 km wide. The delta covers an area of at least 500 km2. In the delta, the main river channel crosses the Karabaskum sandy desert. Each link in the canyon chain has its own name. The uppermost one is called Aktogai, then followed by Kurtogai, Moiyntogai, Sarytogai. The most important sights of the river are bizarre canyons and groves of relict ash in Sarytogai tract. This makes Sharyn sharply different from all the rivers of Zhetysu.

One of the first written mentions of Charyn in the form of Jarun, Charun refers to the XV century. In the same form it is mentioned in the XVI century. On the map of J.-G. Renata it is called Zarun. Researcher A.P. Gorbunov puts forward a version of the origin of the name of the hydronym from the tree species - ash, which is erected by him to the ancient Turkic name of plane-tree (zharun). "Outwardly, ash is very similar to plane-tree, i.e., chinara. Wood is very suitable for the production of stringed musical instruments. It is safe to say that it is its name of zharun that formed the basis of the name of the hydronym Charyn" [Quotedaccording to Gorbunov, 2014, p. 441]. As for musical instruments, it can be noted that in ancient times they were sacral sacred instruments of shamanic-baxes and were intended for sessions of worship of ancestral spirits and treatment of patients.

Gives A.P. Gorbunov and other semantic versions of the Sharyn hydronym. For example, the Kyrgyz word for "ball" is "a river with a fast current that does not meet obstacles". The Kyrgyz word "char" means "diversity of forests along the river bank". But both of these characteristics are inherent in many Zhetysu rivers and do not reflect the individual characteristics of Charyn canyons.
