Aulie-Agash

Aulie-Agash (Ulken-Agash, Kiyeli-Agash, 700-year-old willow, sacred trees). The sacred tree - Aulie-Agash - is located 310 km east of Almaty in Panfilov district, near the village of Koktal; the sacred willow is 280 km from Almaty and 190 km from Taldykorgan in the Kerbulak district of Almaty region (SNNP "Altyn-Emel").

"Aulie-Agash" is translated from Kazakh as "sacred tree". According to legend, merchant Baibosyn, who accompanied the caravans along the Great Silk Road, stopped after a difficult journey to sleep, hitting the ground with his staff. Soon a young sapling grew on this place. According to another legend, the staff belonged to a saint named Chamashruba, who stayed in the grove for the night on his way to Mecca.

In many civilizations since ancient times, trees have been revered as a reservoir of gods, their visible embodiment, as enlivened beings, carrying life-giving power and saturated with magical energy. The cult of trees was spread in the ancient Indian civilization, and in the steppe civilization it is associated with ancient animism, Tengriism of ancient Turks, who conducted collective prayers near the trees, lonely standing near the springs, caves. Pilgrims perform ritual actions near the sacred trees: they clasp to the mighty trunk to get life-giving energy, tie a ribbon, the handkerchief to the branches with their deepest wishes. Around Aulie-Agash there is a grove of Karagaches. According to legends, in the grove people suffering from skin diseases were able to be cured from diseases with the help of water, which fills the hollows between the roots of the trees in the warm season. This water is also attributed to its miraculous properties.

"700-year-old willow." According to some reports, the age of the tree, which is revered by the people as sacred, is 700 years. The mighty tree can be embraced by several people holding hands. According to the legend, in the XIII century under this willow tree rested the great "shaker of the universe" Genghis Khan with his army. The tree is located in the Kosbastau tract, on the territory of the State National Natural Park "Altyn Emel". The park occupies 523,053 hectares and is located in the valley of the Ile River (Almaty region). It was granted the status of a protected area in 1996 and since then has been open for fans of eco-tourism.

Ancient tree grows in the center of the elm grove, which has a metal fence around its perimeter. Due to its age, the elm has a huge size - 6.5 m in circumference. A stone paved alley leads to the tree, and benches and a gazebo are installed for visitors. Nearby there is a small mosque and a caretaker's house.

Altyn-Emel National Park is the only desert park in the Republic where different landscapes (mountains, plains, river floodplains, riparian forests, sands), ungulates (kulans and gazelles) live. Ecological tourism is developing in the park along the established tourist routes accompanied by guides.

Sacred objects are connected with the fact that sacred trees are revered as sources of healing, saving, life-giving power, giving childless mothers offspring, giving healing to the sick from illnesses, well-being to the needy. A vivid example of tree cult in Kazakhstan is the pilgrimage to the ancient trees - 700-year-old willow and Aulie-Agash. Sacred trees are natural monuments of local importance.
