Researches of the Shymkent Museum of Local History
The museum expedition started excavations of the medieval settlement Zhuzumdik on the left bank of the river Keles (Keles district, Chimkent region). The site of the settlement has a rectangular shape (420х360 m). Excavations have begun in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the settlement.
On an area of 116 sq. m in the northwestern part of the settlement, a cultural layer with a thickness of up to 1.5 m was studied, the remains of residential premises built from pakhsa blocks and mud bricks were found. Room 1 contains a tandoor-type hearth and a ceramic altar hearth. In excavation 2 in the northeastern part of the settlement, a utility room was cleared, in which khum, tagor, plates, vases, bowls, pots, fragments of gilded glassware were found.
The ceramic complex of the monument makes it possible to date it from the 6th-8th centuries (according to V.G. Grigoriev Kaunchin III culture) until the 13th century.
