Research at Mangyshlak
The reconnaissance detachment of the Mangyshlak Museum of Local Lore and the detachment for the study of Stone Age monuments of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, carried out work on the Ustyurt Plateau. In the Besbulak tract of the Mangistau region, many stone products from chalcedony were found, among them - scrapers, tools with a notch, fragments of arrowheads, retouched plates and flakes, cores and flakes of the Neolithic period.
Chalcedonolite outcrops were found in the Zhusaly area of the Eraliev district. Nodules with many negatives of spalls and flakes with large impact tubercles were found nearby. Perhaps, the primary processing of stone products was carried out here.
The sites of Tlkuli I and 2 are located on the sea terrace 350-400 m apart. The discovered stone inventory is typical of the Neolithic.
The Neolithic sites of Sultan-Epe I and 2 are located on the Tyub-Kargan peninsula. A large part of the collection of stone products is collected here - scrapers, piercings, retouched plates and flakes, arrowheads, cores, etc. Obviously, these are workshop sites. The material for the manufacture of tools was mainly translucent flint.
The Paleolithic sites of Onezhek I-VII were found on the ravine's sides near the Sarytash Bay. The area abounds with silicon outcrops. Among the stone artifacts are cores, side-scrapers, fragments of bifaces, chopping-like tools, and flakes. The presence of large impact tubercles characterizes many products. There are cores designed to remove Levallois plates up to 30 cm.
