Koitas, the sacrificial complex

It is a group of burial and ritual constructions of the Bronze Age, early Iron Age and Middle Ages, timed to the natural object - the rock Aulietas. It is located 1 km north of the village of Koitas (Bayanaul district, Pavlodar region). The complex is located on the flat ground on the left bank of the stream, reaching the foot of the rock Aulietas. In 1972 the monument was fixed by the expedition of the Pavlodar Regional History and Local Lore Museum. In 2007 it was surveyed by the PAE reconnaissance team headed by V.K. Merts.

The monument consists of three stone earth barrows with ring fences inside the embankment with a diameter of 11 m and a height of 0.6 m; 11 ring fences with a diameter of 3-6 m; five oval and rounded barrows with a diameter of 3×4×0.3 m and nine rectangular fences with a diameter of 4 to 8 m, located in a chain from west to east. In one of the fences there is a stone stele. 50 m north of the eastern edge of the chain, at the southeastern foot of the Aulietas Rock, there are several dozen circular memorial fences composed of eight stones. Behind the rock on the hill there are four stone barrows with a diameter of 3-5 m, height up to 0.4 m and several Kazakh graves. All these different funerary and ritual constructions form a single complex, in the center of which is the sphinx-shaped rock Aulietas. They indicate a special attitude to this place as a sacred one, as evidenced by the name of the rock and its unusual shape.

The monument is connected with the ritual actions of the Bronze Age and early Iron Age tribes related to the worship of fire and the image of the World Mountain, as evidenced by the numerous eight-stone altars located at its foot.

The object is of cultural and historical importance as a source for studying material and spiritual culture of the Bronze Age tribes, early and medieval nomads of Northeast Saryarka.
