Located 60 km north of Balkhash city (Aktogay district, Karagandy region). Absolute height is 1,213 m.

The mountain in the south of Saryarka is a particularly revered natural-historical place. According to historical data, its name in Kazakh means "the mountain of the holy elder Bek", who lived in a cave on the top of Bektau ata. Bek helped people with advices, medicines, meeting with those in need at the entrance to the cave. There are many legends and legends about the existence of healing springs, about the stone of desire, giving help to all asking, and about other mysterious places that open up to the seekers. Women came to him with their pain, shared their experiences. These were their tears flowing down the shimmering vaults of the cave, which had healing power.

The magical power of the gorge attracts tourists, allowing everyone to feed on its energy. In Bektau ata are healing not only the waters in the caves, but also the air itself, soaked in the smell of rosehip, spiraea, hawthorn, honeysuckle, currant. Very rare plants listed in the Red Book have survived here. Among the influxes of stone layers and numerous shrubs can be found a rare animal - dwarf jerboas, in the lower reaches live corsac, fox, argali.

The first archeological excavations in the area of Bektau ata were carried out in the 1950s by A. Kh. Margulan. To date, the results of research conducted by the expedition of the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology under the leadership of A. Z. Beisenov are known. The received data allow to draw a conclusion that the region settled down in the early Iron Age as well. Apparently, many hundreds of years ago the mountain attracted human attention.
