Description
It is located on the territory of the village of Zhalpaktobe.
Surveyed in 2010 by the expedition LLP “Archaeological expertize” (S. Akylbek, Ch. Kudabayev), the instrumental plan was removed, geographical coordinates were obtained. Currently, due to the dense development, the size of the settlement is 70x70 m. In some places, the raw masonry of the wall is noticeable. The height of the preserved walls is 1 m. The territory of the site is fenced, since in the first half of the 20th century the site was occupied by a cemetery.
The site was studied in 1939-40 by the expedition of the Jambul archaeological site (G.I. Patsevich). In 1956, excavations were carried out at the settlement by a detachment of the NAE IHAE of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (T.N. Senigova). In 1983-86, the TAE of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR and the archaeological expedition of the Set of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the IHAE named after Ch.Ch. Valikhanov of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (K.M. Baypakov) were examined. The settlement is occupied by a modern cemetery. The western edge of the settlement is destroyed by clay sampling.
The area around is occupied by vegetable gardens and buildings of the village of Zhalpaktobe. The excavation work is currently impossible there.
According to G.I. Patsevich, the settlement of Zhalpaktobe can be identified with the city of Zhikil, which was reported by the Arab geographer of the 10th century al-Maqdisi. He described it as “a small village” at the distance of a human voice from Taraz. The opinion about the identity of Zhalpaktobe and Zhikil was shared by T.N. Senigova and K.M. Baypakov.
