Description

It is located in 10 km to the south from Tasshagyl village, in 10 km to the east from Karakol village (Kyzylkoga district, Atyrau region).

The cemetery is located in the northern part of the Taisoigan sands and enjoys a special respect among the population of Atyrau, so now there is a house for pilgrims (tileuhana), where the family of Izimov Niyaz Myrzashuly, born in 1977, from the estate of Kozha-kedey, is permanently living. Maten kozha, whose name served as a necroimic cemetery in the future, was a companion of Beket ata and was buried here in 1802. The old part of the cemetery, represented mainly by fences and embankments of velvet sands, is its center, from the north-west, north-east, south-east, south-west new burials are made. Unique samples of carved stele-kulpytases have been well preserved in the necropolis. Here near the cemetery from the western side we have fixed the place of the old mosque Maten kozha.

The necropolis was surveyed in 2007 by the West Kazakhstan Complex Ethno-Archaeological Expedition (WKCEAE, headed by S.E. Ajigali, head of squad - R.A. Beknazarov).

Maten kozha cemetery is one of the original late Kazakh architectural memorial-cult complexes of the North Caspian region, it is a small cemetery of family and clan character. Carved steles - kulpytases of the complex are a valuable source on the history of monumental stone-cutting art, as well as memorial Arabic epigraphy of the region.
