Description
The underground mosque of Beket-Ata has a special status among Kazakhstan's religious sacred objects. In terms of its significance and influence on society, this mosque is comparable to such shrines as the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and the Omar Mosque in Jerusalem. Being in a remote area, cut down in calcareous rock formations, the mosque is one of the most desirable objects for pilgrims. The complex includes a tombstone, a white-walled mosque on the top of the mountain, and, in fact, the underground mosque itself. Beket ata (Beket Murzagululy) (1750-1813) was a native of the Adai tribe of the Munal clan.
From his youth he was distinguished by wisdom of judgment and skill in military affairs. Having come as a pilgrim to the shrine of Shopan ata, the young warrior saw a prophetic dream (ayan). Shopan ata told him to study and then to teach others. After studying for many years in Khiva with the famous Sufi Bakyrzhan-hadji, Beket returned to his native land. In his youth, he became famous as a skilled military commander and a brave warrior. Desiring to establish peace and harmony in his homeland, Becket took the path of religion. After studying in Khiva with the famous Sufi Bakyrzhan kazhy and becoming a Sufi, Beket returned to his homeland and built four rock mosques.
The first mosque in Kulsary is the Ak Mosque, the second is in the chalk rocks near the village of Beineu, the third is in Baishatyr, on the Ustyurt plateau, and the fourth underground mosque was cut down in the rocky massif of the Oglandy tract. Among all four mosques, it is the complex in Oglandy that is the spiritual and scientific center. In addition, there is also a saint's grave there. Sufi, mystic, architect, sage and teacher, Beket ata is a kind of defender of his land and patron of the wise and just.
