Description
This is the first museum opened on the territory of Mangystau. The museum building was built in 1853 and was previously the summer residence of the commandant. The museum complex is located on the territory of the former garden of the Novopetrovsk fortification. The main exhibition is located in the halls of the commandant's summer house. More than eight out of ten years of the exile of Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet and talented artist, have passed on the land of Mangystau. The main part of the museum's exposition is materials, telling about the life and work of Shevchenko T.G. in 1850-1857. The museum-memorial complex forms and carefully preserves the heroic indomitable image of Taras Shevchenko, which is important not only for the Ukrainian people, but also for the Kazakh people, since Shevchenko T.G. became almost the first European artist who glorified the beauty of the Kazakh land.
It is also known that Shevchenko T.G. planted the first tree in the Novopetrovsk fortification. There are stories that it was thanks to Shevchenko T. that the garrison garden turned into a green park. The poet planted his willow there, which grew from a stalk brought by him from Guryev (modern Atyrau). For more than a century, the residents of Fort Shevchenko have protected this sacred tree, known even now as the “Tarasov willow”. The object of unflagging tourist interest is also an ancient log house under a gable roof, which is still known as the “Shevchenko well”.
In 2017, the Taras Shevchenko Museum, the oldest museum of the poet outside Ukraine, celebrated its 85th anniversary.
