Description

Among the early cult complexes of Mangyshlak, the Karaman-ata necropolis should be noted, 35 km south of the village of Shetpe, whose eponym is also associated with the cycle of legends about the descendants of Shopan-ata. According to legend, it was possible to take a cleansing oath at the grave of Karaman-ata. Being a very large necropolis, Karaman-ata contains characteristic funerary and religious buildings: an underground mosque, a complex of Oguzo-Turkmen tombstones and Kazakh (18th -19th centuries) monuments. The Kazakh tombstones, mainly kulpytas with koytas, are distinguished by a variety of three-dimensional solutions and rich decor.
