Excavations of medieval Talhiz

The Talgar detachment of Semirechye expedition of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR continued excavations of urban estates located along the street crossing the territory of the Talgar settlement from south to north. The residential part of estate 2 has been completely excavated and the yard has been partially cleared. The residential complex consisted of seven rooms. There were tandoors in two rooms in the sufas in two - horseshoe-shaped earthen hearths. Other rooms were storage rooms. They were lined with stones, fastened with clay mortar, compartments for storing food, cellars, grain pits. The walls of the building were built from pakhsa with stones at the base or only from clay. Wood was used in the ceilings.

In the southern part of the courtyard, a round base of the yurt, 6 m in diameter, was cleared - a platform rising above the general level of the courtyard, smeared with a thick layer of clay and lined with a ring of stones. A yurt in the yard of a permanent urban dwelling is very remarkable. It is evidence of the pastoral and agricultural way of life traditional for the region. During the excavations of the estate, ceramics (cauldrons, fragments of canteens and water-bearing jugs, mortars, khums) and iron buckles were found. The manor dates back to the 10th-12th centuries.
